Congratulations! The big day you have been waiting for is finally upon you. All the deadlines, exams, all-nighters and evenings in the SU bar have finally paid off and you are ready to enter the big scary world armed with a shiny new degree. Whether this is your first or third Graduation, LiFTS has some tips for making the most of the day.
CHOOSE YOUR OUTFIT WISELY
Although this is England, Graduation week at Essex tends to bring out the nice weather so plan your outfit accordingly. Remember you are going to be sitting in gowns for quite a while in a packed room so make sure your dress/suit is lightweight and bearable in the heat.
The most important part of your outfit is your shoes (low/mid heels advised!). If you are wearing new ones, it is advisable to break them in before the day. Remember the Ivor Crewe has lots of steps to walk up and down so it’s a good idea to practise your walk across the stage beforehand!
THE MORTARBOARDS ARE COMPLICATED!
If you have a small head like me, the hats are a pain! Add as many hair pins as physically possible to keep your hat at bay and plan your hairstyle accordingly! However, as uncomfortable as the mortarboards may be, what’s Graduation without the obligatory hat in the air photo?!
Yes, Graduation ceremonies are long but that doesn’t mean the last person to be presented to the Chancellor hasn’t worked as hard as everyone else. Make sure you cheer extra hard for your friends and show them just how brilliant they are!
SEE AND DO EVERYTHING
Although Graduation is often a frantic affair what with trying to get your gown on properly to making sure you haven’t lost your tickets, it’s important to savour every moment of the day. Get your picture taken by the professional photographers to send to all your family and friends, buy that Essex hoodie you’ve always put off getting or purchase a stuffed version of Campus Cat to take home with you!
TAKE MILLIONS OF PICTURES!
Although the Graduation ceremony can be brought on DVD afterwards, your future self will thank you in years to come that you and your guests documented everything of the day. Get as many pictures with your friends, academic and admin staff and of the University as possible – it will serve as a wonderful memory of your time at Essex.
GO TO YOUR DEPARTMENT RECEPTION
Even if it just for a short while, enjoy your Department Reception (only if for the free food and drink!). It’s also a wonderful opportunity to thank the academic and admin staff of your department for all their help and guidance over the past few years.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST…ENJOY IT!
You’ve worked so hard to get to Graduation and earn your degree. It is your day to celebrate your achievements before taking your next steps so take it all in and enjoy it!
Good luck to all LiFTS’ 3rd years, MA and PhD students for Friday 21st July. We in the Admin team can’t wait to celebrate with you all!
